There are places you visit, and there are places that change the way you see the world. For me, Derawan falls into the second category. I thought I’d seen beautiful islands before—but nothing prepared me for the surreal, underwater-rich, soul-soothing experience of this island-hopping day in Derawan, Indonesia.

Starting the Day in Paradise
8AM: Calm Waters & Big Expectations
It all started early in the morning, around 8:00 AM. The sea was calm, the sky cloudless, and the air already warm with adventure.
Maratua Paradise Resort – First Snorkeling Stop
Our first stop? Maratua Paradise Resort, where the name lives up to its promise. The water was unbelievably clear, revealing a vibrant coral garden below. Snorkeling here felt like swimming through a real-life aquarium—tropical fish darting around, sunlight dancing across the seabed. And of course, the iconic overwater bungalows made the perfect backdrop for photos that barely capture how magical it felt to be there.

The Hidden and the Wild
Exploring the Mysterious Halo Tabung Cave
Next up was Halo Tabung Cave, a hidden gem tucked away in Maratua. The entrance is narrow and unassuming, but once inside, the light filters down in just the right way to make you feel like you’ve discovered a secret portal. It was quiet, echoey, and cool—a peaceful contrast to the bright ocean outside.
Kehe Daing – A Serene Lagoon Experience
We continued on to Kehe Daing, a tranquil lagoon with shallow waters perfect for relaxed snorkeling. The vibe here was completely different—calmer, more meditative. It’s the kind of place where time seems to slow down, and your only job is to float and take it all in.
Kakaban Trench – Deep Blue Wonders
Then came Kakaban Trench, where the ocean floor drops into a stunning underwater canyon. Snorkeling here was a bit more thrilling—deep blues, schools of fish, and a sense of awe that reminded me how small (and lucky) I really am.

Heartwarming Encounters & the Perfect Ending
Sangalaki Island – Where Baby Turtles Steal Your Heart
But my favorite part of the trip? Without a doubt, Sangalaki Island, home to a sea turtle conservation center. Watching baby turtles waddle toward the ocean is something I’ll never forget. It was cute, heartwarming, and a beautiful reminder of the importance of protecting the ecosystems we explore.
Gusung Sanggalau – A Hidden Sandbar Heaven
As if that wasn’t enough, our final stop was the Gusung Sanggalau Sandbar—a patch of white sand that emerges only during low tide. Surrounded by shallow turquoise waters and completely empty, it felt like we had our own private island for the afternoon. Cue the barefoot strolls, drone shots, and well-deserved chill time.
Back to the Cottage – Ending with Gratitude
We ended the day back at our cottage, salty, sun-kissed, and absolutely in awe of what we’d just experienced.
Final Thoughts: Derawan is More Than a Destination
Derawan isn’t just a destination—it’s a collection of moments you’ll carry with you long after the trip ends. If you’re craving clear waters, marine adventures, and stories worth telling, then maybe—just maybe—it’s time to discover this hidden paradise for yourself.
If this sounds like your kind of adventure, don’t just dream it—make it real.
