Exploring East Kalimantan: From Balikpapan to the Heart of the Dayak Culture

East Kalimantan, located on the island of Borneo, offers a unique combination of natural beauty, wildlife, and cultural depth. This region is not only home to Indonesia’s future capital, Ibu Kota Nusantara (IKN), but also to ancient traditions preserved by the Dayak people, who continue to live in harmony with nature.

A journey through East Kalimantan begins in Balikpapan, a vibrant coastal city known for its friendly locals and rich biodiversity. Travelers can visit the Tritip Crocodile Breeding Center, one of the largest in Indonesia, where thousands of crocodiles are cared for. Just a short drive away, Lamaru Beach offers calm waves and a relaxing tropical atmosphere, perfect for an afternoon escape.

Heading north, visitors will reach Bukit Bangkirai, a natural rainforest reserve famous for its canopy bridge, suspended 35–40 meters above the ground. From this height, you can take in breathtaking views of towering Bangkirai and Meranti trees — a true encounter with Borneo’s lush wilderness.

The journey continues to Samarinda and Tenggarong, where the legacy of the Kutai Kingdom, Indonesia’s oldest Hindu kingdom, still stands. A visit to the Kutai Palace and Museum gives insight into centuries of local history and royal culture.

No trip to East Kalimantan is complete without meeting the Dayak community in Pampang Village. Their traditional Lamin longhouses, colorful beadwork, and captivating Hornbill Dance express deep respect for nature and ancestors. It’s a meaningful experience that connects travelers to Borneo’s cultural soul.

Before heading home, stop by Pasar Kebun Sayur in Balikpapan — a lively market filled with gemstones, traditional medicines, and local crafts that make perfect keepsakes from Kalimantan.

East Kalimantan is more than a destination — it’s a journey through time, tradition, and tropical beauty.
