Raja Ampat is a paradise on earth. Untouched and absolutey gorgeous, Raja Ampat and its majestic islands put their spell to everyone who visit. Located on the northwestern tip of Papua, Raja Ampat stands for ‘Four Kings’ in native language. These kings are the beautiful islands of Waigeo, Misool, Batanta, and Salawati. More than 600 smaller islands are scattered around the larger ones. Raja Ampat lies in the center of the coral triangle, the most bio-diverse marine region on earth. Above water, the landscape of Raja Ampat is exceptionally stunning. Under water, it is as captivating if not more. The diversity of marine life in the area offers endless exploration. Raja Ampat is home to 1,430 species of reef fish, 10 times the number of hard coral species found in the entire Caribbean, 75% of all known coral species in the world, and 700 kinds of mollusk. Diving here is an experience unsurpassed by anything. Fish and other marine animals crowd the water, following divers, or just simply being nonchalant and just keep on with whatever they are doing. Manta rays, green turtles, even whales are regular sightings here.

Arguably the most wellknown tribe in Papua, the Asmat is an ethnic group of New Guinea, residing on the Papua province, on the largest alluvial swamp in the world. Despite the fact that it is truly an inhospitable place to live, the Asmat calls this place home. They were famous for being vicious warriors and notorious for the headhunting war tradition in the past. Now, they are known to be some of the world’s best woodcarving artists with creations that are prized and respected, even displayed at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art.
The Asmats are very dependent on their forest, river and sea. Any imbalance in nature will directly and indirectly affect their way of life. This traditional tribe depends their whole livelihood on the presence of the sago palm (Metroxylon sagu), fish, forest game, and other edible items from the forest and sea. Materials for canoes, dwellings, and woodcarvings are also all gathered locally, and thus their culture and biodiversity are intertwined.
Cendrawasih Bay is the place to see spotted whalesharks, thriving in their natural habitat. Consisting of 18 islands, the entire bay area has magnificent vertical drops, picturesque hard coral gardens, sponge life, and all types of fish. Other than the smaller reef fish, Cendrawasih Bay is the giants’ playground. They would come in pods and divers can freely swim with them.
Waigeo Island is the place to go to see the rare Cendrawasih or ‘Bird of Paradise’ up close. Only 5-6 KM from Sorong by boat, Waigeo is rich with interesting tradition and culture. In the west and north parts of the island, there are traditional bamboo flute perfromances during religious festivals, Independence Day celebration and visits from VIPs. South Waigeo, on the other hand, is the place for divers to marvel on Raja Ampat’s unadulterated underwater beauty.
The village of Arborek is worth the visit. Standing out as the pioneer village to embark on developing local regulations for community-based marine conservation, Arborek is an interesting place to visit. Converse with the locals and observe the way the live will fascinate any visitor. They are proud and resourceful people. The ladies mostly work in the field of arts and crafts, making traditional hats and bags (noken). Divers need not to go far from the island to see some fascinating stuff. Just by the island, the reefs are already spectacular with regular visits from manta rays.
Misool, directly bordering with Seram Sea receives heavy underwater traffic from marine animals, including the huge ones. Even from the boat, the richness of the marine life underwater is visible. The underwater visibility is a staggering 10-30 meters! Remote and vacant, Misool and its neighboring islands are safe from harm, at least until now. The island of Misool is heavily forested with a rugged terrain that is mostly limestone. Even more interesting is the fact that Misool is also home to ancient culture sites. Mesmerize on the petroglyphs written on the wall of caves on the island before leaving!
If you are flying from Jakarta, it will take about 6 hours to Sorong with transit in Manado. From Sorong, there are two kind of ship choices which are speed boat and long boat. Speed boat can take 15 persons in 1 hour 40 minutes. While long boat can take 10 persons in 2-3 hours. You can also hire small boat if you want to explore the islands freely.
- Transportation is definitely the largest expense during your visit to Raja Ampat. Consider traveling in groups to lessen the burden.
- If you do not have an underwater camera, consider purchasing a good one beforehand. It would be such a waste to visit Raja Ampat without anything to capture its underwater perfection. Malaria pills and insect repellant are also important.
- October and November are the best time to visit Raja Ampat, because the sea is calmer.
It is definite that culinary in Raja Ampat will always be connected with all kind of marine product. Try the Yellow Fish Soup which is specific food from this island. Try also Papeda – main food of Maluku and Papua inhabitants. Usually it is served with Yellow Sauce.
